What is VVT-i engine?
Many of us like to compare different types of engines.
But how many of us know what is the real meaning of this intelligent VVT-i engine.
Well, let us talk about VVT-i engine.

VVT-i stands for Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence. This is an automobile variable valve timing technology developed by Toyota.
Year Introduce: 1996
This engine is very intelligent. It is not like your ordinary computer. It can think and adjust itself to make the engine do best to you. When you are driving in some certain road conditions, it adjust the engine to save more petrol for you.  When you need more accelaration, it again adjust itself to give you more power!
It is a system that constantly alters the tuning of your car’s engine to save you money as you drive.
VVT-i engine varies the timing of the intake valves by adjusting the relationship between the camshaft drive (belt, scissor-gear or chain) and intake camshaft. Engine oil pressure is applied to an actuator to adjust the camshaft position.
VVT-i engine is based on the principle of maximising performance by matching the timing of the engine’s air intake and exhaust to your driving situation - idling, acceleration, passing and cruising.
Thanks to the built-in 32-bit microcomputer on the VVT-i engine which will keep on and continuously monitor the RPM reading. Every 1/1000th of a second, the engine will optimise the air intake and exhaust.Â
For instance, to give you a performance boost during full acceleration, the 32-bit microcomputer turns the air-con system off for the few seconds when you need the extra power. Once you have returned to stable speed, it turns the air-con system on again. This can all happen so fast, so efficiently - you will not feel any change in comfort.
The advantages that a VVT-i engine can produce are:
- More Power - By optimising valve timing, the engine delivers powerful torque at low to medium engine RPMs. This continuous optimisation provides smooth acceleration every time.
- Better Fuel Efficiency - The VVT-i engine uses fuel more effectively and keeps wastage to a minimum.
- Cleaner Exhaust - With more efficient combustion that lowers exhaust emissions, the Toyota vehicles is more environmentally friendly while improving engine performance.
The engine manifold intake and exhaust have been reversed in the VVT-i engine. The intake is in the front and the output is in the rear of the engine. This improves efficiency, reduces intake noise, and shortens the distance to the catalytic converter.
