Asia Produce Safer Car

Institute for Highway Safety

After reading a report done by Institute for Highway Safety (released on 15th Nov 2007), I was excited that Asian country produces more safer vehicles. I think one of the most obvious reason is due to the higher number of car maker in Asia as compare to other part of the world. There are many other reasons too such as increasing consumer demand on the safety features added to the car.

Out of 34 vehicles tested, the results are:

  • 17 vehicles from Asia (a big clap!)
  • 6 vehicles from US
  • 6 vehicles from Germany
  • 5 vehicles from Sweden

In order to receive the top rating, a vehicle tested must have at least

  • electronic stability control, or ESC
  • top score in front, side and rear impact crash tests
  • side-curtain air bags
  • and etc.

The test is carried out by testing the front crashes at 40 mph and side impacts at 31 mph. As for the rear impact test, it is tested on crashing to a stationary vehicle by a moving vehicles at 20 mph.

Some of the car makers took part in the testing are Audi, Ford, Volvo, Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, Honda and etc.
